Mike Mussina and Chien-Ming Wang have been the mainstays of the Yankees’ surge into first place. But life at the top has not been kind to the Bombers and their two most consistent starters. Mussina has lost two in a row, and for the first time all season, Wang has followed one subpar start with another.
Wang allowed a career-worst 13 hits yesterday, and didn’t get out of the sixth inning as the Yankees fell to the Angels, 5-3, before 54,309 at the Stadium. The Angels are 4-2 against the Yankees this season with four games left, including tonight in the Bronx.
It was the Bombers’ fourth loss in six games and if Wang is slipping into a slump, it’s certainly the wrong time for it. Boston held on to beat Baltimore yesterday and has whittled the Yankees’ division lead to a game. The White Sox completed a three-game sweep of the Tigers and are again making it look like the wild card will come from the AL Central. "I’m not worried about him," Joe Torre said of Wang. "He knows how to compete and he’s been so good for us. When you go into a little lull like he’s been in the last couple times, you don’t want him to stay there, but it’s not a concern. "Physically he’s fine. And if that’s the case, he’ll be fine."
The sinkerballing Wang (13-5) did nothing to allay the concern created by his giving up four runs in five innings last Tuesday in Chicago. His second pitch yesterday ended up as a Chone Figgins home run. Five of the next six hitters singled and the Yankees found themselves down 3-0 with the bases loaded and only one out. Curtis Pride hit into a double play to end the inning, but the Bombers were in a hole to stay.
Angels rookie righty Jered Weaver continued his run of success by succeeding where older brother Jeff failed so often while wearing pinstripes. The Yanks ran his pitch count up to 104, but he left after six innings having allowed one run on three hits and ahead 5-1. Rookie pitchers are 7-5 with a 3.72 ERA against the Yankees this season.
The Yankees scored twice with two out in the ninth on back-to-back home runs by Alex Rodriguez and Jason Giambi off Scot Shields, but Francisco Rodriguez recorded his 30th save by getting Jorge Posada to pop out to end the game. "We didn’t chip away, we hit home runs," Torre said. "We didn’t really mount any threats … we were frustrated because we couldn’t get anything going. It was just a bad day for us."
The concerns with Wang are related to durability. The Taiwanese righthander now has thrown 50 more innings than he did last year, a season in which he lost nearly two months to a rotator cuff injury. "He’s throwing the ball good," Torre said. "(Last year’s injury) came out of left field. It could crop up again, but there were no signs of it last year, either." "I think I felt better (after starts) in April … but more or less the same," said Wang, who gave up five runs in 5-1/3 innings. "I feel fine."
To his credit, most of the Angels’ hits off of Wang went through the infield; sinkerball pitchers are supposed to get grounders. "My pitches were good, but not that good," Wang said. "Everything found a hole." "The balls were going by," Posada said. "Chone Figgins’ home run was the only one I thought that was up in the zone. Other than that, he pitched well."He was good today. They just found a lot of holes." So maybe this was just a case of bad luck for Wang and the Yankees. Both have to hope so.
Weaver outduels Wang

BY ED PRICE
NEW YORK — This had to happen eventually.
Chien-Ming Wang, the grounder-inducing machine, had been superb most of the season despite working with an infield of limited-range defenders. Yesterday it caught up to him.
In the Yankees’ 5-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Yankee Stadium — which cut their lead in the AL East to one game over the Boston Red Sox — Wang wasn’t much worse than usual. But the Angels pecked away, balls got through and he surrendered a career-high 13 hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Angels rookie Jered Weaver, meanwhile, had no issues with his defense. Weaver struck out eight and gave up just three hits in six innings to become the first rookie starter since Livan Hernandez in 1997 to win his first eight career decisions.
"We didn’t really mount many threats," said manager Joe Torre, whose team has lost three of four and five of eight.
"We knew this stretch was going to be very challenging for us," said Alex Rodriguez, who hit one of two homers in the ninth inning that made the game close.
Wang (13-5) suffered his first loss since July 3. He had been 9-1 with a 2.66 ERA at home, last losing at Yankee Stadium on April 21.
But unlike his loss last Tuesday in Chicago, when he was wild, Wang had his usual effective sinker.
"Today was better than last time," Wang said, "but everything hit found a hole."
Three of the four runs off Wang came in the first inning. He had allowed just three first-inning runs total in his previous 24 starts.
The only ball hit particularly hard in the rally was Chone Figgins’ leadoff homer. (Figgins went 3-for-4 to raise his career average against the Yankees to .380, second to Marlon Anderson among active players.)
After that came five hits: an infield single (which could have been scored an error on Alex Rodriguez), a well-placed hit-and-run grounder through the right side, another ground single to right, a chopper up the middle out of the reach of shortstop Derek Jeter and a 40-foot nubber that Wang bobbled.
"He executed real well, the ball was just finding holes," catcher Jorge Posada said.
"He got ground balls — ground balls in the hole, back through the middle," Torre said. "There’s not much you can do about it. … I’m not worried about him."
Of more concern was his team’s difficulty against Weaver. Had Weaver’s older brother, Jeff, pitched this well, the Yankees would never have traded him for Kevin Brown.
Kevin Brown.
"It’s unbelievable how much they look the same," Derek Jeter said of the Weavers. "They pitch a little bit different, but it’s kind of scary how much they look alike."
While Jered’s build and mane resemble Jeff’s, the rookie throws from a higher (three-quarters) arm angle and brings a different repertoire and the guts to throw off-speed pitches when behind in the count.
"It was hard to get a good feel for him," Rodriguez said.
"This kid looks like he’s confident that he can throw any pitch over the plate at any time," Torre said. "Even though he’s not overpowering, the name of the game is being able to locate the ball, and he did that."
Weaver went to a full count on eight of the first 11 men he faced and needed 70 pitches for the first three innings. But he settled down, using 34 pitches for his final three innings. The only run off Weaver was Craig Wilson’s second homer as a Yankee.
"I was definitely nervous, with that lineup they had going against me," Weaver said. "But my ability to make pitches in certain counts, that’s huge."
With the Yankees down 5-1 in the ninth, Rodriguez and Jason Giambi homered off Scot Shields. Francisco Rodriguez got Jorge Posada to fly out for his 30th save.
In the past seven games, 23 of the Yankees’ 34 runs have come via homers.
And they have not come back from more than one run down to win since July 26 and have not rallied from a deficit of two or more since July 18.
"We’d like to get something going," Torre said, "where we can put a little streak together. We had a good run here, and now we’re sort of holding our own, which is what happens during the season."
Is Wang starting to hit the wall?
That’s two mediocre performances in a row for Wang. With this being his first full season in the rotation, has Wang peaked in 2006?
We’ll see after a couple more starts. Too early to say he hit a wall just yet.
He’s had a couple bad starts, he’s just tired. It’s August, also the White Sox and the Angels were the two teams he had never faced before. Usually that’s good for a pitcher, but he was probably just a bit nervous considering he had never seen them. Hardly "hitting the wall". I’m sure he will be extremely valuable the rest of the year and in the postseason. Only thing I’m worried about is whether he will snap out of this little funk for the 5 game Boston series.
his GB/FB is 3.31, which ranks highest in the league. in other words, he’s TRYING not to strike people out.
if he wanted to, he could utilize his four seamer, changeup, and splitter more to K more batters, but he’s already gone on record saying that he prefers throwing sinkers so that he can induce grounders and go deeper into games.
First loss since early July. His start against the White Sox was a mediocre one. If not for Cintron’s bases loaded single in that game (very good pitch, great sinking action, but Cintron hit it because of his position within the batter’s box), it would’ve been 4-2 win.
Not trying to make excuses for Wang but I don’t think we should come to expect him to pitch as poorly as he did today (with the exception of Chone’s HR, all were singles), nor should we expect him to pitch the way he did against Tampa Bay or Toronto.
For his career, he’ll probably be somewhere in the middle. 12-16 wins per year with an ERA of 3.5-4.0.
But it’s understandable with those starts against Tampa Bay and Toronto that we’ve come to expect greatness from him. The sky’s the limit if he’s able to harness ball control for an entire game. Nonetheless, he’s fun to watch.
Well, before today’s game (I’m not sure if MLB.com has updated his stats for today) Wang was 8th in ALL of MLB in innings pitched (166 IP) and only 6 innings behind for the MLB lead.
Considering that he has never thrown that amount of innings in his career, I think it is worth keeping a track on.
Although he tired later in the game, don’t let that first inning fool ya…
When he started the game, he was a little too "pumped". His pitches were a little up (1st pitch of the game was high, 2nd pitch was high = HR, hit and run pitch was high), but then he settled in.
He got lots of ground balls: one was a hit that A-Rod booted, a few others just found holes.
Wang will ALWAYS have an inning or two where the gorundballs that find holes or get booted will stack up and create runs.
But that doesn’t mean those first 3 runs were a result of any sort of great collapse on his part.
and because he doesn’t do what you want, he yankees should trade him?
again, there’s a difference between not being able to strike batters out and not choosing to.
fwiw, i already posted on numerous occassions that i believe wang will be the best pitcher on the staff next year because he will have had 1 full year under his belt and will be able to consistently find his arm slot by then. also, i do believe that he’ll begin to use his other pitches more to get more K’s, but i doubt he’ll deviate very far from his gameplan.
if you want to trade away a young, NY-tested pitcher who has had great success, that’s your prerogative.
Did he really pitch badly today? The result wasnt great, but it was ground ball after ground ball in the first inning and beyond. The ball found the hole today, but I dont know that it was such a terrible outing.
I think we want to be careful about using trends and ‘history’ to make decisions about individual baseball players. I don’t think any kind of statistical measure explains exceptions to the rule – and clearly exceptions exist.
The key is understanding why exceptions exist, and if the exception is likely to continue
Wang’s K/9 IS low… but his groundballs/9 is insanely high. His slugging pct against is much lower than the norm.
It means his ball has mean sink, and guys don’t get good wood on the ball – and that is much more so than the ‘usual’ pitcher
He’s maintained a high level of performance for almost two seasons.
This isn’t Shawn Chacon cheating the WHIP gods for a year…
I remember that time in Roger Clemen’s second season, where he had 2 bad starts in a row and I was like "oh crap if the Red Sox were smart they would trade him now".
Naw I`m not worried…..a little tired and some bad luck and no hitting behind him……that`s baseball.Peaks and valleys .
I can remember a sinker ball pitcher for the Yankees who lasted 11 seasons, won 20 games three times, once on a team that went 77-81, and generally is considered one of the most underappreciated Yankee pitchers of all time. Granted, his K/9 number of 4.25 was about 1.1 higher than Wang’s, but I would love to have a Mel Stottlemeyer in his prime on this team right now.
Anyone who wants to trade Wang because of a low K/9 stat doesn’t know the value of a groundball pitcher.
