Wang gets a no-decision & plenty of praise

Jorge Posada thinks he may have some of the best stuff on the Yankee staff. Kelly Stinnett likes the way he handles himself in pressure situations and Joe Torre is long past the point of being surprised when he delivers yet another quality outing.
And yesterday, Chien-Ming Wang gave his backers even more to talk about after he turned in a solid eight innings in the Yankees’ 4-3 come-from-behind, 12-inning victory over the Braves at the Stadium.
"You’ve got to keep reminding yourself how old he is," Torre said of his 26-year-old righthander. "Because you send him out there and you expect something like this and he doesn’t surprise you when he does it. Yet, I think it’s unfair to keep expecting that from him even though he’s certainly capable of it."
Wang has been more than capable, particularly in his last five starts. After tossing eight innings yesterday, allowing seven hits and two earned runs, Wang has gone at least seven innings in each of his last five outings, going 3-1 with a 2.48 ERA over that span, including yesterday’s no-decision. His ERA dipped to 4.01.
Wang veered from his plan just twice yesterday. The first time was in the fourth inning when he yielded the Braves’ first run on an RBI double by Andruw Jones. He wavered again in the sixth when with two out and nobody on, he got touched up for three straight singles by Chipper Jones, Andruw Jones and Brian McCann, the latter knocking in Chipper Jones to give Atlanta a 2-0 lead.
But Wang got Jeff Francoeur to bounce out to end the inning, pitched a perfect seventh and allowed a harmless single in the eighth before departing for the day after throwing 91 pitches.
"Wang did an outstanding job," Derek Jeter said.
After Wang picked up the win last Friday night against Florida, when he allowed four runs in seven innings, Posada said he thought righthander possessed top-shelf stuff and maybe had the best arsenal on the staff. Yesterday, after catching Wang for the first seven innings, Stinnett echoed Posada’s praise of the quiet righthander.
"Well, he’s right up there," Stinnett said. "I mean he’s close to Mariano (Rivera). When you throw 96-97 (mph), have some movement like he does and be able to put it over the plate, that’s pretty special."
