Wang said later he had never lost a game on a walk-off homer. A player who rarely shows emotion, he flung his glove into the dugout. Torre, Derek Jeter and pitching coach Ron Guidry all approached him offering words of comfort.
"He was great," Jeter said. "Everybody in here feels bad for him."
Wang said he was not too tired to start the ninth. But he left two sinkers up, a sign of fatigue. Pinch hitter Marlon Anderson grounded one into right field. Zimmerman crunched the next pitch.
"I knew," Wang said of the home run. "I was mad."
Mariano Rivera picked his way carefully through the crowded visitor’s clubhouse at RFK Stadium yesterday and stopped at the locker of Chien-Ming Wang.
"I wish I had been there," he said.
"I know," Wang replied.
Rivera then touched his fist to his heart and nodded to his younger teammate, their conversation finished.
"That’s my job," Rivera said. "I would never second-guess Mr. Joe Torre. If it was up to me, I’d be pitching every day. Obviously, I look at today. But that’s why he’s the manager.
"It’s too bad to see Wang lose that game. He was great. He has been there for us. It was my fault, I had to be there."
Torre: You knew you were pushing the envelope a little bit. I mean the kid was very
courageous today, and, you know, it was tough. You get two groundballs to
start the 9th inning, and the he just got a pitch up, and, you know, we
lose the ball game. But he was spectacular, in a game where we certainly
needed every bit of it. You know, he gave it to us.
Is that what hurts worse, a game..
Torre: Yeah, I think it’s more about him than us. But, you know, as I say,
you couldn’t have asked for more than that from him.
What’s the difference in emotions between last night’s loss and today’s?
Torre: They are both losses. You know you have to move on to the next town,
next game, you know, just get that good feeling back.
Can you make the link that yesterday’s game cost you this one?
Torre: Last couple of games we’ve used a lot of our bullpen, and especially
the late guys. And we had just…you know we had Proctor because we thought
if we needed to we could probably get it out from him. But we just didn’t
wanna go there, I mean with Mo.
Joe, Wang was so economical even in this heat does that allow him to stay
Torre: Well, you know, I tell you, he still jogged out to the mound, we didn’t
even want him to swing when he went up to hit. And he was just trying
to hit the ball out of the ball park. But he’s pretty remarkable. He really
is. The reason, obviously, that the attempt to go with him that far was because
of how he challenges people and how economical he is.
Mussina has talked before about how he knows the bullpen is depleted he
knows he needs to get the innings. Do you think Wang sensed that today?
Torre: Well that’s the second time we’ve done it to him. And he certainly
knew. Sure he did. But this is pretty much the trademark of what he does.
You know when you have a pitcher that relies on a sinker like he does you
basically gonna throw the ball the middle of the plate and make them hit
the ball and for the most part it’s in the ground. He just happens to get
the last one up. But that’s the difference. He doesn’t have a great deal
of variety. He’s got some off-speed stuff but for the most part he’s gonna
make you dig it out on the ground.
Joe, did you go into the 9th with something in your mind that you would
make a switch? Did something have to happen you would’ve brought in the
Torre: Well if i just felt he wasn’t throwing strikes, and he is completely
exhausted type of thing. So you have to have people ready just in the event
that you don’t like what you see basically.
I’m sorry, huh, maybe somebody asked this before. How do you think
about Wang’s performance for today?
If you have your full complement of relievers, 7 inning and out or?
Torre: Maybe 8. The heat doesn’t seem to bother him, which is pretty
remarkable. It was bothering us. Doesn’t seem to bother him.
Was it tough for managers to sit there knowing that the bullpen is that
short and the game is that close?
Torre: You know you still send somebody out there that you feel good about.
Sure it is. You’re lacking one guy you always go to in situations like
that. Sometimes the circumstances…the circumstances always dictate
what you do, and it just so happens that we are in a position to
win the ball game without Mo which doesn’t happen very often and we just
didn’t get away with it.

I feel sorry for him. Poor thing. He was so upset. I hate Michael Kay. He seemed almost HAPPY that the Yankees lost. I mean, whos announcer is he anyway? Jerk
Jerk

I don’t know which loss is worse.. this one or yesterdays.
Poor Wang indeed. He was tired, and the whole bullpen has been used too much. He did so well, and it stinks that one bad pitch ruined everything.
I still love him, but I’m upset they lost.
